Hmm, something like Quasimodo, or Frankenstein’s monster? A wretched, mutant freak of nature with a benevolent heart? Oh wait… bloodthirsty… i don’t like that, to be honest, but interesting nonetheless.

I seriously hope it’s something more original than Frankenstein. Tho judging by the description it’s definitely not a human. Hellion and Occultist already got it covered when it comes to freaks on border of being monsters ( tinkering with the abyss and hellion’s barbarian rage ). So I guess this dude is really going to be a monster hero.

Sucks to hear about the death in the family. :\ That’s always awful, and I don’t blame things getting delayed for that… development has just been really unlucky in that regard…

In response to the better news, I’m super, super hyped for this mysterious new “Abomination” class! It’s the same sort of excitement I had for the reveal of Acrid in Risk of Rain; I always love playable monster classes in games and I’m extremely curious to see how this one pans out… and how it’ll affect the storytellers/roleplayers!

Wherein I occasionally draw fanart and/or attempt to write a fanfic. Pick your poison (or don't, and possibly survive).

Abomination sounds like something hideous and truly deformed that you can’t hide with just a mask (like what the Leper does). I’ll gamble its a class based on some form of deformity (I just hope its not the typical hunchback – not that I have a problem with real people who suffer from this condition, its just that Hollywood has made this such a cliche). Perhaps its even one of the Ancestor’s ‘prodigal sons’ who have returned to undo the ‘sins of the father’? An experiment gone wrong who ran away and now has returned to exact terrible vengeance on its ‘maker’.

On a side note, how sweet would it be to fight the ‘Ancestor’s remains’ in the Darkest Dungeon as a sort of boss? I know he committed suicide and all. But who’s to say the towns people didn’t ditch his corpse in the Darkest Dungeon? A mob was supposedly after him hence triggering the suicide right? I just wanna meet the ‘Ancestor’ that badly 🙂

Wouldn’t that be cool if The Ancestor was one of the bosses in the Darkest Dungeon (I mean the region)?

I have the sensation we will face the Ancestor, one way or another. I mean, he was an occultist, a necromancer, he brought beings from ‘outher spheres’ to this world. He wasn’t just an ordinary man.

And to add to the Abomination especulation, maybe a swine-man escaped from the Warrens that for some reason joined the Heir’s forces?

Having the Ancestor as a boss sounds awesome. I imagined up possibilities for the fight and I think it would be great if Wayne June actually started to mock you on missions when you fought him and after that. Maybe even make it so that once you’ve beaten him for the last time his narration just stops. I know that might sound a bit too aesthetically crushing, but I think that it might actually make for a powerful scene. No despairing cries. No more inspiring speeches. Just ambient music and the far reaching call
    Of the Darkest Dungeon…

That’s… very powerful. I can’t imagine what would my reaction be to that. After all, the Narrator is THE reason I bought this game.

    Just… damn.

They better do this or I’ll be disappointed.

Ancestor surendered to temptations of Chaos and became a demon of his own. Judging by some obvious hints in the game, like human cultists, the last dungeon aka D.D is most likely going to be a demon infested place.

Thanks. I just think it would be disappointing if you were to come out of the first mission for the Ancestor and he would STILL be there delivering old lines regardless of the fact that it’s just been revealed “oh crap, he was in on it all along” or maybe once the Ancestor shot himself, the Thing beneath the manor forcibly reanimated him to serve it. And I think things would feel more final if you were never to hear from him again as if to imply the Ancestor is truly dead.

That being said I don’t want him to be the final boss. That honor should go to the the “Thing” that is lurking in the Darkest Dungeon. Everywhere, you look there are references to its influence. When the Hag and Prophet found out about it, the former became a cannibal, the latter tore his eyes out, and they both went violently insane. I remember reading that the Necromancer came to the Ruins because of “arcane energies” it sensed there. Cults and witch covens come out to the estate in droves. Almost like a pilgrimage… The Warrens are said to predate any known civilization in this region. The fishmen are explicitly said to gather at the Cove for religious services. Even the Ancestor himself, who seems to be the root cause of all this evil, has a line about how there was this itch, this hunger that compelled to start on his pursuit of dark power. Maybe his actions were not wholly the result of boredom or insanity. I just hope that when we see it, the Thing is able to hold up to the hype.

In any case, I’m stoked to see what this new dungeon is like. Especially after all the neat enemy mechanics the Cove introduced.

P.S. Sorry about your father-in-law Chris.

Very in-depth analysis Argus! Like every dungeon has two bosses, The Darkest Dungeon should have two as well. First we fight the corrupted Ancestor, and then the ‘Thing’ he unleashed from beneath the manor. However, having Ancestor as the boss might be problematic as mentioned (narration).

Or we could all be wrong here 😛

In any case, I’m super hyped right now. Hope the devs have something good up their sleeves.

What if the Darkest Dungeon was not just a location… but also a boss itself?
Like, as you got closer to it’s core or what have you, it tried to stop you with monsters that quite literally come from the woodwork (or masonry) and the traps, rather than being mechanical or separate living things, are actually the dungeon trying to halt you in your tracks.

It’s easy to kill something that exists in one place at a time. Destroying something that’s all around you, however… completely different story, that.

That is precisely why I mentioned the possibility of ending his narration as horrible as that sounds for thematic reasons. In all fairness killing the Ancestor ought to be the sort of thing saved right to the climax of the story, right before the final boss. So it the atmosphere might not feel too empty (especially with that awesome score). Plus the main reason I’m sticking with this theory is that the prospect of hearing Wayne June deliver all kinds of creepy one-liners such as
    1. There is no escape.
    2. You can kill me, but It will kill you.
    3. There are things worse…than death. I should know.
    4. (Maniacal laughter)
is just too badass to pass up on. Also I cant help but feel suspicious of the Narrotor given how psychotic he sounds sometimes and how he seems to project his thoughts after blowing his brains out.

Interesting concept. Not quite sure how it would work in gameplay terms. Maybe make it so that the deeper you go into the dungeon, the more organic the background. In any case, making the Manor iteslf a creature itself (possibly brought to life by the dark thing inside?) sounds just delightfully macabre. Reminds me a little of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Street, except without the awkward nationalistic bend.
