Post Release Update and Short Term Road Map

Still round the corner there may wait, a new road or secret gate

J. R. R. Tolkien

Darkest Dungeon has been out of Early Access now for almost two weeks and we wanted to take a moment and share some of our excitement over the coverage we’ve received as well as give all our players an update on what to expect in the coming months.

To kick things off here is just a small sample of some of the coverage we’ve received:

“Darkest Dungeon is a triumph… A gold standard for early access games.” – Total Biscuit

“Darkest Dungeon is an incredible take on the classic dungeon crawl.” – Dan Tack, Game Informer

“Darkest Dungeon is a mean, capricious game. Success is a gambler’s thrill, addictive and illicit. It comes rarely.” – Jake Muncy, Wired

“…a grim and merciless tactical strategy game whose great tension comes from its many layers of complexity…” Dan Stapleton, Editors’ Choice – IGN

We are super thankful to all of our players who joined us on this journey through Early Access. You helped us make our game the best it can be!

Bug Fixes, Performance Improvements, and Translations

Since release, we’ve been working on improving the performance of the game for many of our players as well as collecting feedback on our Localization to take back to our partner to improve the overall quality of the translations. We are super grateful for your patience and willingness to help us track down these issues and resolve them as quickly as possible.

As you’ve no doubt seen, we’ve already deployed a number of hotfixes, and those will continue as necessary!

Short Term Roadmap

Aside from bug fixes, a bunch of other stuff is in the works for the near future:

  • Kickstarter Backer Trinkets: these are done and being QA’d. We expect them to deploy within a few days!
  • Gameplay tweaks: now that we’ve been able to watch and collect some data regarding the endgame, we have a few gameplay tweaks planned that should help reduce some of the grind that occurs in mid and late-game.
  • Credits: in addition to crediting ourselves for all of our hard work (har har), we will soon be adding the Kickstarter Backer credits in game ($20 tiers and higher).
  • Linux: This is in work and we’ll announce a date as soon as we know how long it will take.
  • March 8th Update: Town Events, the Merchant, and the Musketeer (Adventurer Tier Kickstarter reward class). Circle your calendar–these new features are planned for that day!

Long Term Roadmap

Steam Workshop Support – We remain super excited about empowering modders. Sometime this Spring, we want to have Steam Workshop support in the game and create some better tools. We’ll keep you posted as we make progress towards that.

PS4 / Vita: We have great partners at Sony, and now that the Steam launch is out of the way, we can dedicate ourselves to figuring out a great controller scheme and continuing with the process of finishing up the PS4 and Vita versions. As you may already know, we showed the PS4 version in a hands-on demo at the PlayStation Experience (PSX) in San Francisco and December, and it was a hit!

While we don’t have a firm release date yet, know that it is in work and we’ll update you when we can!

Kickstarter Physical Rewards (Art books, prints, dioramas): The game art is done, so we can also begin production of these items!

Other Awesome Stuff: While we can’t confirm specifics, let’s just say we aren’t out of ideas, and have some other things planned as well!

REMINDER: Launch Discount Ends on Tuesday February 2nd! Tell your friends!

Finally, we wanted to remind everyone that on Tuesday, Darkest Dungeon’s price will be returning to its planned price of $24.99 now that we’re out of Early Access. During our release day, we had an issue with the Steam store that prevented us from increasing our full release price to $24.99 with the 2 week launch sale price of $19.99. As a quick solution we just set the full price to $19.99 to ensure people were buying the game at the discounted price. On Tuesday, the price will go up to $24.99 where it will remain until the next sale. So if you want to grab it at the Early Access Price/Discounted Price, do so before Tuesday!

Delve deep, bring a shovel, and remember to just let Wilbur be…

Oh, so town events and new classes are being held back till March? I guess much needed testing is required. You guys also said at PAX there will e DLC’s coming in future, I guess it’s too early to shed some light onto this?

And Wilbur needs to be an unlockable after you finish the Darkest Dungeon, seriously. Add him some cool katanas and we have our own little ninja pig.

I’m still hoping that my Highwayman’s gun will do more damage than the GR’s dagger someday~ but otherwise I’m enjoying the release. I feel that the HWM has been pushed too far down due to Grapeshot shenanigans in the past and he has much less survivability than the GR. :3

Please at least consider bumping his HP up a tier if you don’t plan on increasing his damage output so that he can be something like the Hellion in the front line. 🙂

I thought we are getting the Muskeeter regardless if we are supporters or not?

Here to say, since the day it launched, that I really loved this game! After finally completeing the Darkest Dungeon, which was really hard, I wish I could get something (reskin, trinket I don’t care) for beating that.

Very good work, looking forward to the Merchant and the Musketeer, as well as some much-needed reductions in early Deeds bottlenecks and (hopefully) changes to the Leper and Highwayman.

I backed in Early Access, not during Kickstarter, but I assume there’ll be some way for me to get my hands on the Musketeer even if it’s just as paid DLC?

Congrats on the rave reviews and great sales! I’m a little concerned that only 30% of your buyers have played the game yet, but I guess they’re just collectors.

“Gameplay tweaks: now that we’ve been able to watch and collect some data regarding the endgame, we have a few gameplay tweaks planned that should help reduce some of the grind that occurs in mid and late-game.”

Alright, that sounds good! Mid-end game grind was pretty hefty. *cough remove Never Again cough*

Can you scale back that crusader nerf a little bit?

I really enjoyed my “inquisition” team. Double crusader plague doctor vestal. A fist of righteousness, striking down into the bowels of the estate, rooting out evil for the holy flame and whatnot.

Let holy lance be used from slot two again please. You can keep the crit percent chance reduction if you must, but like me have my rotating crusaders again please!

This all sounds great! Just one thing I need to ask… Musketeer is not just going to be exclusive to backers is it? Will the rest of us still be able to get a hold of the class in some way? Because I’d really like that please.

Looking over it again, I think I may have been mistake about the musketeer. I think it’s just a reward like the Abomination was. Except instead of one person working with RH to make a custom class, the Devs set out a bunch of concepts and the backers voted for one. I’d like confirmation one way or the other, but either way looking forward to her.

Also, I really hope she uses an arquebus. I love those things! XD

I don’t really know how forums work, so, uh, @outlawcutthroat I meant to post this with my last post since this is what got me to write it. It’s part of the kickstarter talking about rewards https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460250988/darkest-dungeon-by-red-hook-studios/posts/1445362

Also, I just now realized that the musketeer will most likely be using a musket, which is fine since it’s the arquebus’s successor.

I’d just like to point out that the turn that it costs me to use the Highwayman’s Tracking Shot is not worth the benefit. I’m giving up 80% damage to gain 20% damage and then some. Combat is over before you can make up thee difference and the buff is gone before you can make up the difference.

I’d much rather things like this become a debuff of some sort. Maybe 30% less damage done by the enemy, a slightly lower chance stun or something that will justify me spending a turn on it.

Turn #1 is very valuable for most encounters. That decides if you get a kill to reduce the damage your team takes or not. Setting aside that the benefits of tracking shot mathematically does not surpass the penalty of using it, something that won’t contribute to a round 1 kill / disable will always be a bad move. The only reason why I might use Tracking Shot is to buff Grapeshot Blast if I intend to spam it on the front 3 of a boss encounter or something. Camp buff and 40% damage from trinkets would let me Grapeshot Blast at 120% damage for 3 turns after the buff.

I’m sure you get the idea. 🙁

As for Pistol Shot, please look at Thrown Dagger. Now look at Pistol Shot. Look at Thrown Dagger again. Back at Pistol Shot. If people look really hard you’ll know what I mean. 🙁

Hope stuff like this gets addressed in a future balance patch :3
